Letter: Port of Alaska clarification

I need to correct the record regarding the picture in Sunday’s paper titled, “Moody Mount Susitna.” Namely, that is not the Port Of Alaska that you’re looking at in the foreground! It is the storage yards of a couple of private barge operators that are not associated with the port, and the Marathon Petroleum tank farm — also not on the port, although they are neighbors and port users.

While it’s fair to refer to everything in and around Ship Creek as the “Anchorage Port area,” it’s a common mistake to think it’s all the port. Actually, the real port is out of sight and around the corner to the north … and a much larger diverse and sophisticated commercial operation! Just wanted to manage expectations a bit.
