Letter: What truly matters

Nick Begich III’s opinion piece endorsing Donald Trump exemplifies everything that is wrong with the Republican Party.

Saying it’s only “the policies that truly matter” illustrates that Begich and his ilk are perfectly comfortable with racism, sedition, misogyny, homophobia, violence, corruption, sexual assault — and the list goes on — if the guy indicted on 91 felony charges supports their pet resource development projects without regard for science, our climate or the will of the public.

This toxic and soulless perspective is far too common among conservatives. It is time for America — including editorial boards — to stop treating such ignorant blather as legitimate discourse as if Trump were a respectable candidate for the presidency instead of a dire threat to democracy.
