Letter: Port renaming

As a lifelong Alaskan and a graduate of East High School, I’m seeing many parallels between the renaming of my high school from East Anchorage High School to Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School and the renaming of the port. The school board defied recommendations from the students, staff, alumni and principal and changed the school’s name — when there were many other school options — under pressure from Celeste Hodge and the Alaska Black Caucus.

As many have noted, including the ADN editorial, what should have been a straightforward and objective decision by the Assembly to rename our port after the late Don Young, the vote has become anything but. Sadly, both the Anchorage School Board and the Anchorage Assembly have allowed politics to get in the way of making the right decision.
