Letter: Real-time fact checking

We should enact a new Fairness Doctrine with the simple edict that when anyone engages in political commentary in broadcast media, that openly visible on the same screen is real-time fact-checking via AI. Given cellphone technology, this could even be possible on radio broadcasts and in social media.

Instant fact-checking is likely possible now, and if not, it will be very soon. The trick, of course, is to keep partisanship out of AI, which may require an unrelenting eternal effort. But imagine going on Meet the Press, knowing that everything you say will be fact-checked instantaneously.

In time, I believe this might even be more effective than the old Fairness Doctrine.

Indeed, putting a premium on the truth is surely akin to the lifeblood of democracy.
