Letter: War lessons forgotten

Are the lessons from Iraq so quickly forgotten?

In that war, overconfidence in U.S. technological superiority and arrogance at the beginning of the war — remember Don Rumsfeld’s gleeful “shock and awe?” — led to years of death and destruction for all involved with no good conclusion.

It’s shocking that on Jan. 12, Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, the director of the U.S. military’s Joint Staff, said, referring to the Houthis of Yemen, “I would expect that they will attempt some sort of retaliation,” adding that that would be a mistake and, “We simply are not going to be messed with here.” This arrogant general needs to be removed immediately before he gets the U.S. and world into another horrible, impossible war in the Middle East.
