Letter: Anchorage sidewalk clearing

As of Feb. 6, the snow on the sidewalks of Fireweed Lane still had not been cleared of snow from the storm that closed schools on Jan 29. And the State of Alaska Department of Transportation plows have deposited more snow on top of the sidewalks as they clear the street.

On Feb. 6, I observed four separate students from Steller Secondary School walking in traffic on the roadway because the sidewalks are impassable. It has been nine days of forcing students and other pedestrians into dangerous situations. This is common all winter long on state-maintained roadways in the Municipality of Anchorage. DOT needs to step up to the plate and figure out how to clear sidewalks in a timely manner, with proper equipment.

Feel free to call the State of Alaska Department of Transportation hotline for the Anchorage area (907-338-1466) to voice your concerns.
