Letter: School goals

Our NAACP goal for public schools is for students to join the U.S. in reading, writing and math. That will require about a full year of gains and doubling the percentage of students who are proficient.

Studies show that the path to legally adequate education is strategic investments directed as follows: class size of 15 in primary grades and 25 in higher grades; 5,000 core subject teachers, 5,000 kids in high-quality preschools; and getting 100,000 K-12 students to class in the morning.

Such a heavy lift needs the governor and legislators to get on it and get ‘er done.
