Letters to the Editor

Letter: Health care cost debate

Thanks to Anchorage Daily News for publishing the recent commentary regarding the pending repeal of the 80th percentile health care rule. It was encouraging to see two well-known physicians, as well as two other individuals with experience in the health care industry, supporting a program that has been in place for nearly 20 years and has provided consumer protection against high health care costs.

Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Seattle is Alaska’s largest health insurance company and has advocated repealing the 80th percentile rule using misleading statements and omitted details, most of which are self-serving at best. The commentary authors invited Premera’s market manager to come to Alaska to have a public conversation to address its misleading claims. Better yet, how about ADN and ProPublica doing their own deep dive into the facts and figures to help all of us consumers make informed decisions regarding our health care services?
