Letter: Double-digit tax increases for seniors?

Since 2019, home prices in Anchorage have gone up 22%. You would think that it’s a good thing, right? Not so much for seniors.

They have a fixed tax exemption of $150,000 that has not been changed for at least 30 years.

Every year that tax appraisals go up, seniors’ tax burdens go up in addition to the normal tax increases associated with local government that everyone pays.

The past few years have resulted in double-digit tax increases for seniors, many of whom are on fixed incomes.

But the worst is yet to come.

With the latest tax assessment increase of 9.2% on average, seniors are going to get zapped upwards of $400 to $800 a year in additional property taxes. This is a burden that many seniors cannot afford and should be addressed by the Anchorage Assembly before the tax bills are mailed out in June.
