Letter: Uncharted waters

The story about the state of the Alaska ferry system really hit home for those of us who were booked on the only Whittier ferry this year. I fully understand safety and wouldn’t want a bad experience in open waters.

With less than two weeks’ notice, our cargo had to be completely changed out. Studded tires are now staying on and regular tires going on top of the pickup shell. Of course, now we had to buy a full roof rack system, including running tracks to be installed this week. Extra gas cans, tools, cold weather supplies, lots of cargo we’re taking south had to stay back.

On a social media site about the Alaska Highway, we saw numerous recent accounts of the state of the highway due to construction. A few were needing special permission to drive their vehicle through Canada due to prior U.S. offenses. Flying to Juneau and catching the ferry there can be expensive; car transport costs also add up. We need the ferry system!
