Letter: Invest in students

Congratulations to our teen leaders for organizing protests across Alaska in favor of increases to the base student allocation.

They are not asking for luxuries, just for hiring more teachers to allow smaller class sizes, paying teachers salaries competitive with the Lower 48, and forming an actual retirement pension system.

There could be much more on the “want” list — our schools were once the best in the nation, but we have been pennywise and pound foolish. Now parents are leaving and new arrivals are shrinking, with our failing, unsupported schools as a major cause.

Years ago, one of our politicians once remarked that our children are our future. If not, then what is?

Invest in the future; support a substantial increase to Alaska’s BSA.
