Letter: Rethinking our loyalties

Let’s be realistic. Israel is not the “safe haven” for Jews that the founders promised it would become.

Nor did the establishment of the state eliminate, or even diminish, antisemitism in the world. It is a senseless exercise of pointing fingers to explain these facts. It is more important to recognize them as facts.

While we are attempting to be realistic, we should also soberly assess the value of our alliance with the state of Israel. The United States has, in fact, not benefited from that alliance; it is a liability. And in the final analysis, it is no longer possible to claim that support for the state of Israel is justified on moral grounds.
