Alaska Ski for Women set for Sunday, and it will be warmer

The 28th annual Alaska Ski for Women is set to run Sunday at Kincaid Park.

Hailed as North America’s largest women’s cross-country ski event, it brings together nearly 1,000 Alaska women of all ages and ability levels each year. The Ski for Women supports the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage as well as nonprofits working to stop domestic violence in Alaska.

The 4K freestyle ski starts at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by the 4K classic race at 11 a.m. and a costume parade at 11:45 a.m. Once the parade is completed, the party wave starts at noon.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a warming trend over the weekend, with Sunday temperatures rising into the teens and light winds.

On Saturday, Kincaid will be decorated and open for a Ski for Women friends and family day, geared toward anyone who wants to participate but would prefer to avoid the crowds and ski independently. The course will be decorated starting at 10 a.m.

Bib pickup is available Thursday from noon-7 p.m. at the Midtown Mall at 600 E. Northern Lights Blvd. Bib pickup and registration on Saturday will be available at the blue timing building in the Kincaid stadium, and pickup and late registration Sunday on-site starts at 9 a.m. Late registration is only available for the party wave.

The minimum donation is $35 to register. There’s also a silent auction with virtual bidding running until 8 p.m. Sunday.

The Alaska Ski for Women was founded in 1997 by Sally Burkholder and Ann Mize.
