Lightweight halibut takes early June lead

Enjoy your moment of fame, Jeremy. It's unlikely to last. Jeremey Schmitt of Loveland, Colo., caught a 79-pound halibut Sunday aboard the Mako skippered by Scott Glosser to take the momentary lead in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby monthly standings.

But if history is any guide, he will be passed. In two of the past three years, the biggest fish of the entire summer was landed during June, both well over 300 pounds. Homer angler Thomas Youngblood landed his winning 355-pound winner last June 26.

"May monsters are done, and June is slower than molasses," said derby coordinator Paula Frisinger in a press release. "Hard to believe we have only one on the derby board."

The 248-pounder caught May 21 by Jesus "Skip" Torres of Elmendorf Air Force Base continues to hold the overall derby lead.

Big 42-pound king takes over derby

Robert Cunningham weighed a 42-pound king salmon on Saturday to grab the lead during the second weekend of the Ketchikan Salmon Derby.

Cold, windy weather held down the number of anglers, who are vying for more than $90,000 in cash in prizes. The grand prize winner will earn $10,000.
