Memorials planned this week to honor Rep. Don Young

Several memorials will be held this week in honor of U.S. Rep. Don Young, who died earlier this month after 49 years serving as Alaska’s lone congressman.

Young, the longest-serving Republican in House history, will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday. Alaskans can watch coverage of the ceremony on C-SPAN’s website. Live coverage will begin at 7 a.m. Alaska time. A re-broadcast will air beginning at 4 p.m. local time.

An arrival ceremony will be held followed by a congressional tribute open only to invited guests. The late congressman will lie in state from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern time in Statuary Hall, where members of Congress, Young’s family, staff, and invited guests can pay their respects.

Previous figures who have lain in state in Statuary Hall include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Rep. Elijah Cummings.

On Wednesday, a memorial service will be held at a church in Great Falls, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time.

On Saturday, a memorial service will be held at the Anchorage Baptist Temple. The event will begin at 11 a.m. local time, and a live stream will be available.

Both services are open to the public.
