Bethel SAR warns against travel on shortcut Bethel-Napaskiak slough

Bethel Search and Rescue is warning travelers not to use the shortcut to Napaskiak saying the trail is no longer safe, according to a story on KYUK Public Media.

Bethel Search and Rescue Chief Mike Riley received a notice from the village of Napaskiak asking people not to travel on the shortcut slough between Bethel and Napaskiak, saying there were numerous vehicles that needed to be pulled out. The trail is being marked off and they ask travelers to start using the main trail that goes through the main Napaskiak Slough.

Further upriver, Bethel pilot Brandon Leary took a picture of an open hole that formed near Aniak. The hole runs on the river from the end of the runway to where the tank farm is.

Another traveler took a picture of an open hole forming on the side of the Gweek River, a little over 20 miles inward from the mouth of the Gweek.

Bethel Search and Rescue says most trails on the Kuskokwim are still safe, but they ask travelers to be aware of more hazards that may be showing up with the longer sunny days.
