Miller’s sizzling 68 wins State Amateur golf championship

The day was hot, and so was Jordan Miller.

The Anchorage golfer scorched the Creek Course at Moose Run Golf Course on Sunday to capture his second straight State Amateur championship.

Miller fired a 4-under-par 68 to cruised to victory in the four-day, 72-hole tournament. He beat Greg Sanders by a comfortable seven strokes to clinch his second straight title.

The women's competition also produced a repeat champion — 15-year-old Katelin Richards of Anchorage, who posted a three-round total of 243.

Richards, whose steady play merited scores of 81, 80 and 82, outdistanced second-place Halcyon Swisher by 10 strokes.

Miller started the day one stroke behind Sanders but grabbed the lead for good after two holes.

Sanders shot 76 to hold off Adam Baxter for second place. He finished with a 294 total to Baxter's 298.

They shared the first-day lead at 73, Miller carded a 71 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead and Sanders came back Saturday with a 72 to take a 218 total into Sunday's play. Miller, who shot 75 Saturday, entered Sunday's round at 219.

Miller's 68 was the best round of the tournament.

Other winners crowned Sunday were William Arnold, who won the men's first flight with a 330 and a two-stoke cushion over Mark Adams; Taylor Holley, whose 377 topped the men's second flight by eight strokes; and Tonnette Jackson, who shot 279 to edge Connie Johnson by three strokes in the women's first flight.
