Mr. and Mrs. Marvin pick up a matching set of victories at Matanuska Peak Challenge

Christy Marvin won her seventh championship and her husband Ben won his first Saturday at the Matanuska Peak Challenge, a hard-core mountain race even by Alaska standards.

The race is a 14-mile out-and-back race on Lazy Mountain and Matanuska Peak that tests and torments racers with 9,000 feet of vertical gain. It begins with a climb up Lazy Mountain, descends on the backside of Lazy and then goes to the top of Matanuska Peak before doing the whole thing again in reverse.

There are no aid stations along the way.

Christy Marvin, 40, ran the second-fastest women’s time in the 33 year history of the race and now owns the six fastest women’s times.

She made the trip in 3 hours, 30 minutes, 29 seconds. She was about four minutes off the record she set in 2016 (3:26:32) and nine minutes ahead of runner-up Anne-Marie Madden (3:39:33).

Ben Marvin, also 40, grabbed the men’s victory in in 3:03:50, which ranks as the 10th-best men’s time in history. He triumphed by more than 15 minutes over runner-up Christopher Kirk (3:19:19).

The men’s record of 2:55:43 was set in 2012 by Eric Strabel.
