The Mat-Su Miners scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a tied game and take the first win in the Alaska Baseball League Top of the World Series.
The Miners defeated the Peninsula Oilers 3-1 Saturday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
The teams return to the diamond for Game 2 of the best-of-three series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
With the game tied at 1-1, Mat-Su broke its sixth-inning scoring drought on a single by Jake Scudder that drove in Levi Jordan for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth.
Scudder was a part of every run for the Miners. The first baseman went 3 for 5 with runs in the second and eighth innings to lead the Miners at the plate.
Trey Dawson drove in Jared Huber in the fifth inning for the Oilers' only run.
