Barrow boys, girls claim basketball titles at ACS tournament

Barrow collected both championship trophies on the final day of the Lime Solar/Pepsi Invitational basketball tournament Saturday at Anchorage Christian.

The boys used balance scoring to bury ACS 75-45, putting 10 players in the scoring column.

The girls rode a 23-point performance from Kuutuuq Danner to a 58-48 win over ACS.

The tournament featured the boys and girls teams from eight schools across Alaska.

Girls

Barrow 58, ACS 48

Kuutuuq Danner poured in 14 points in the fourth quarter to lift Barrow to a 58-48 victory over ACS in the girls championship game.

Danner's outburst allowed the Whalers to pull away from a 36-36 tie after three quarters. Barrow outscored ACS 22-12 in the final eight minutes.

Danner finished with a game-high 23 points, a total boosted by a 9-of-10 effort at the foul line. Rose Mongoyak added 13 points for Barrow.

Tournament MVP Amir Williams scored 15 and Chaunice Carr 14 for the Lions.

Valdez 53, Bethel 38

Valdez limited Bethel to five points in the third quarter en route to a 53-38 win that earned the Buccaneers third place in the tournament.

Bobbi Mott's 16 points and Katy Merjoles' 12 points sparked Valdez, which led 21-20 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Buccaneers were up 38-25.

Leading Bethel were Haley O'Brien and Courtney Williams with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Point Hope 73, Kotzebue 71

Kotzebue's huge fourth quarter wasn't enough to beat Point Hope, which eked out a 73-71 win to grab fifth place.

Point Hope led by 15 after three quarters but Kotzebue made the Harpoonerettes sweat by outscoring them 22-9 in the fourth quarter.

Shauna Koonuk dropped in 30 points for Point Hope to lead all scorers. Miranda Eakin topped the Huskies with 18, eight in the fourth quarter.

Eielson 38, Delta 35

Shelby McCahon scored 13 points and Mikaila Alexander added 12 to lead Eielson past Delta 38-35 in the seventh-place game.

The Ravens owned an 8-1 edge at the foul line.

Allison Suis netted 13 points for Delta.

Boys

Barrow 75, ACS 45

Kevin Goodwin, Travis Adams and Kamaka Hepa combined for 38 points to spearhead Barrow's 75-45 championship-game romp over host ACS.

Goodwin nailed three of Barrow's eight 3-pointers, including two in the second quarter when the Whalers pulled away. He scored six of his 13 points and Adams had seven of his 13 in the second quarter to boost Barrow to a 32-24 halftime lead.

Hepa, the MVP of the eight-team boys tournament, added 12 points.

Mareng Gatkuoth's 14 points sparked the Lions.

Bethel 46, Valdez 40

A big advantage at the free-throw line carried Bethel past Valdez 46-40 in the third-place game.

The Warriors sank 19 of 32 foul shots, an effort led by Jayvin Williams, who was 7 of 12, and Carl Charlie, who was 6 of 8. Charlie finished with a game-high 16 points and Williams followed with 12.

Valdez, which was 2 of 10 from the foul line, got nine points apiece from Tyler Mann and Seth Auble.

Delta 76, Eielson 57

Three players hit double figures for Delta in a 76-57 win over Eielson that gave the Huskies fifth place.

Micha Helkenn led the way with 20 points, followed by Bogdan Kravets with 17 and Martese Blankenship with 15.

Jeramiah Brown led a balance attack for Eielson with 13 points.

Point Hope 58, Kotzebue 37

Point Hope's Andrew Oktollik drained 11 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 33 points in a 68-37 rout of Kotzebue in the seventh-place game.

Marvin Lee's 13 and Andrew Berger's 12 topped Kotzebue.
