Bird Creek rower named all-American

Heather Kelly of Bird Creek, who holds down the No. 6 seat on the top ranked varsity eight shell for Division II Western Washington University, on Monday was named to the 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Pocock All-America women's rowing team. Kelly, a senior who attended South High, aims to help Western win a sixth straight national title this weekend at Gold River, Calif.

"Heather has done a wonderful job this year," said Western coach John Fuchs said in a press release. "She anchors the engine room and her leadership in the stern has helped the younger kids stay focused."

It is the third trip to nationals for Kelly, who rowed on last year's championship team after being an alternate in 2008.
