Miners' Paskiewicz is ABL Player of the Year

Closer Brick Paskiewicz, who flummoxed hitters and also hit for a .341 average, was voted Player of the Year to lead a league-high six Mat-Su Miners in balloting for the Alaska Baseball League's All-League Team.

Paskiewicz, a right-hander from Paradise Valley Community College, went 2-0 with 12 saves and a 0.90 earned-run average in 16 appearances. He made the all-league team as both a relief pitcher and outfielder.

Paskiewicz also shared the Top Prospect honor with Chugiak-Eagle River left-hander Conner Menez (3-2, 1.96) of Masters College.

Tanner Nishioka of the Miners, who hit .363, and Stephen Trosclair of the Anchorage Bucs, who hit .294 and drove in 25 runs in 47 games, shared the Silver Slugger award.

Like Paskiewicz, Nishioka was named to the all-league team at two positions, first base and utility player.

Mat-Su's Ben Taylor was voted Coach of the Year after leading the Miners to a 31-10 league record and the National League pennant.

Peninsula Oilers infielder Alex Seifert won the Golden Glove. He made just five errors in 38 games.

Sunday marked the last day of the ABL's regular season. The only games remaining are in the best-of-3 Top of the World Series pitting the Miners against the visiting Bucs, the American League champions. Game 1 was set for Monday night at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer, with Game 2, and Game 3 if necessary, set for Tuesday.

In Sunday's games, A.J. Franks (4-1) scattered 10 hits over 7-plus innings to lead the Fairbanks Goldpanners to a 4-0 road win over the Bucs.

Also, all-league outfielder Luke Hamblin drove in two runs to spark the Anchorage Glacier Pilots to a 5-4 road win over the Chinooks.

Mat-Su on Sunday used Nishioka's two-run home run and three RBIs, and two RBIs from all-league outfielder Alex Caruso, to rack a 7-4 road win over the Oilers.
