NYO wraps up with record in seal hop

The 45th annual Native Youth Olympics wrapped up Saturday with a record-setting performance by SigFurd Dock.

Dock, competing for the Lower Kuskokwim School District team, shattered the NYO record in the boys seal hop, in which contestant hop, seal-like, across the floor on their hands and toes while in the push-up position.

Dock hopped 188 feet on the hardwood floor to beat the old record by more than 16 inches. Calvin Bell of Nome set the previous mark of 171-5 in 2009.

Dock was the only record-setter in three days of competition in events that are rooted in Alaska Native culture. It attracted hundreds of Alaska students in grades 7 through 12 from across the state.

Madeline Ko of West Valley was one inch away from tying the NYO record in the girls one-foot high kick. She jumped 91 inches to earn her second title in the Athlete of the Meet award for the girls. Ko also won Friday's two-foot high kick.

Kim Gumera of Unalaska claimed the boys' Athlete of the Meet award. He won Thursday's Alaskan high kick and Friday's two-foot high kick and placed second in Saturday's one-foot high kick.

Makiyan Ivanoff of the Bering Strait School District won the boys' one-foot high kick with a jump of 110 inches, beating Gumera by two inches.
