Seawolves advance to national championships with strong region showing

Both of UAA's nationally ranked cross-country teams are headed to the NCAA Division II national championships.

The sixth-ranked men claimed second place and the 11th-ranked women earned third place at Saturday's West Region championships in Billings, Montana.

The results mark the ninth straight year the men and women have both placed in the top three at the region championships. The men finished first or second for seven years in a row.

Chico State swept the team titles. The Simon Fraser women's team edged UAA by eight points to take second place.

Setting the pace for the Seawolves were juniors Caroline Kurgat and Edwin Kangogo, who won Great Northwest Athletic Conference titles two weeks ago.

Kurgat placed second in the women's 6-kilometer race in a time of 20 minutes, 59.01 seconds. She was about three seconds behind Laura Aceves of Cal State San Bernardino, who won in 20:55.95.

Kangogo trailed three Chico State runners across the finish line to take fourth in the men's 10K race in 30:07.58.

Chico State's William Reyes won in 29:45.16, about 20 seconds ahead of a six-man pack separated by less than five seconds.

The Seawolves entered the meet with both of the defending region champs in their lineup. Two-time men's champion Henry Cheseto placed 11th (30:32.92) and 2015 women's winner Joyce Chelimo placed seventh (21:22.87).

The top 25 finishers in each race earned All-Region honors.

Four men and two women made the grade for UAA – Kurgat and Chelimo for the women and Kangogo, Cheseto, eighth-place Michel Ramirez (30:26.12) and 24th-place Victor Samoei (30:57.21) for the men.

The meet featured a loaded field with six nationally ranked teams in both races.

All six nationally ranked women's teams advanced to the national championships.

But only four nationally ranked men's teams moved on. Only five berths in the national meet were up for grabs for the men, and unranked Academy of Art placed fourth to take one of them. Failing to advance were 11th-ranked UC San Diego and 24th-ranked Simon Fraser.

The national championships are Nov. 19 in St. Leo, Florida.
