South edges Dimond in OT to claim 3rd place in CIC hockey

Skylar Gutierrez scored the game-winning goal with a little more than a minute left in overtime Friday, lifting top-seeded South to third place in the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament with a 3-2 win over sixth-seeded Dimond.

South led 2-0 through two periods at Ben Boeke Arena. Hunter Meyer gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead on a first-period power play, and Ben Trujillo made it 2-0 in the second period. Gutierrez notched assists on both goals.

Tanner Rath put Dimond in contention with two third-period goals, including the game-tying strike with a little more than five minutes left in regulation. Ryan Perius assisted on both goals.

The teams combined for 12 shots on goal in overtime. Gutierrez ended things with 1:14 left in the extra period.

Hannah Hogenson made 29 saves for the Wolverines, including five in overtime. Blue Hildebrand stopped 33 shots for Dimond, including six in OT.

The CIC championship will be decided Saturday when Chugiak and Eagle River meet at 6:30 p.m. at Ben Boeke.

Chugiak, Eagle River, South and Dimond will all play in next week's state championships in Wasilla.
