West Valley rallies, Dimond rolls in state hockey consolation games

The Dimond Lynx bounced back in a big way from a first-round loss at the First National Cup state hockey tournament in Wasilla.

Dimond buried Juneau 8-1 in loser-out action Friday at the Menard Center.

In the other elimination game, West Valley used two third-period goals to rally past Wasilla 2-1.

Dimond and West Valley will meet at noon Saturday for fourth place in the eight-team tournament.

Dimond, which lost to Colony 4-1 on Thursday, was propelled by Tanner Rath's hat trick and Sean Carey's two goals. Gavan Hardy, Dawson Thompson and Hunter Paek also provided goals for the Lynx, who led 2-0 after one period and 6-0 after two.

Goaltender Blue Hildebrand made 14 saves but lost the shutout when Ryan Liebelt scored for Juneau about two minutes into the third period.

Goalies Kyle Farley-Robinson and Cody Mitchell combined for 41 saves for the Crimson Bears.

West Valley trailed 1-0 after two periods but seized the lead with two goals in a span of 2 minutes, 22 seconds in the third period.

The Wolfpack was limited to 15 shots on goal, including five in the first two periods. Tyler Lorring tied the game with an unassisted goal with 11:42 left in the game and Dustin Sadler delivered the game-winner with 9:20 left.

Keel Simon made 23 saves for the winners. Wasilla goalie Aaron Campbell stopped 13 shots.
