West, Dimond will battle for CIC flag football championship

Get ready for West-Dimond III.

The undefeated West Eagles will host the Dimond Lynx at noon Saturday for the Cook Inlet Conference flag football championship.

Both teams posted shutouts in Thursday night semifinal games. West cruised past East 28-0 and Dimond blanked defending champion Chugiak 20-0.

West is 16-0 and Dimond is 14-2, with both of its losses coming against West. The two regular-season meetings between the teams were decided by a total of seven points — West won the first game 20-14 and took the second game 13-12.

"I hope we're ready. They're a great team," said Dimond coach Kathleen Navarre. "I'm happy we get one more opportunity."

Dimond got touchdowns from three players in its win over Chugiak, which finished the season with a 9-7 record.

Megan Luther and Victoria Johansen each scored on 1-yard runs, and Desi Tanuvasa caught a 26-yard scoring strike from Luther.

Luther rushed for 111 yards on 10 carries to fuel the Dimond offense. Defensively, D'Shanna Schuster and D'Avionne Rabb each grabbed five flags, Seanne Bialo supplied four pulls and one interception and Angelline Nageak had one pull and two interceptions.

West used a huge game from quarterback Rebecca Syrup to subdue East, which finished with a 7-9 record. Syrup passed for 235 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 40 yards and one touchdown.

She connected twice with Sylvia Xaivong, who scored on plays of 53 and 28 yards. Xaivong caught three passes for 99 yards and added two big returns of 45 and 25 yards. Syrup also tossed a 14-yard TD pass to Raymi Ross.

Maya Baquiran, who missed Tuesday's quarterfinal game with an injured thumb, returned to seize eight flags, one for a loss, and one blocked pass to power West's defense.

Isabella Roberts added five pulls, one for a loss; Xaivong had three pulls, one for a loss; Hannah Garman came through with two blocked passes, one interception and one pull and Ah'Kayzee Galloway-Davis had four pulls and one blocked pass.

Saturday's championship game will mark Dimond's seventh appearance in the 12-year history of the CIC flag football playoffs. The Lynx have won five championships, more than any other team.

West is seeking its first CIC championship. The Eagles have come up short in three previous title-game appearances.

"It's gonna be a great game," West coach Travis Cantrell said.
