Lynx swim to 11th straight sweep of team titles and Service boys rewrite the record book at CIC championships

The Dimond Lynx swept the boys and girls team titles but the Service Cougars boys team stole the show Friday and Saturday at the Cook Inlet Conference swimming and diving championships.

Brian Jarupakorn broke two conference records and Tavner Wisdom and Nick Price each broke one to lead the Cougars, who won six individual races and two relay races to finish a close second to Dimond in the boys team standings.

The meet marked the end of the high school season for Anchorage high school swimmers. The state championships were canceled because of the pandemic.

Jarupakorn set records in Friday’s preliminary races in the 50-yard freestyle (20.36 seconds) and the 100-yard butterfly (48.61) and went on to win both races by comfortable margins in Saturday’s finals.

Wisdom set the mark in the 100 breaststroke (56.80; the old mark was 57.36) and Price lowered the record in the 100 backstroke (51.14; the old mark was 51.65). The 100 breaststroke final was particularly fast -- both Wisdom and Eagle River’s Matthew Heaphy, who placed second in 57.03, beat the previous mark, set back in 1998.

Service’s rewriting of the record book and Dimond’s continued dominance of the conference were only part of the story at the two-day event, said meet director Angela Heaphy.

“Honestly, despite the record-setting swims, the biggest story of the weekend was that the swimming community came together, came up with a safe plan, and managed to put on a COVID-mitigated meet for 200 swimmers,” she said by email.

"The kids were asked to do a lot of things that they are not used to and which, frankly, are hard -- like swimming until you can barely breathe and immediately putting a mask on, and keeping that mask on for hours and hours in a hot pool.

“They sat distanced, they cheered together but apart, and we had a team of many volunteers who worked together to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

All three of Service’s record-breaking swimmers claimed wins in two individual races (Wisdom’s other win came in the 200 free and Price’s came in the 200 individual medley). Jarupakorn and Wisdom swam on both of Service’s triumphant relay teams and Price swam on one of them.

The Lynx relied on depth to continue their CIC reign. Other teams boasted more individual winners, but Dimond advanced multiple swimmers to all but two of the 16 swim finals.

Dimond won four of the six relay races and enjoyed victories in four individual events. Jenna Walch took the girls diving win, Isabelle Borke won the 100 breaststroke, Scott Babbitt won the 100 freestyle and Kenneth Octuk won the 500 freestyle.

The girls posted an overwhelming 274-point win over runner-up South, and the boys held off Service by 64 points. It was the 14th-straight CIC team title for the boys and the 11th straight for the girls.

The Eagle River girls boasted a pair of double-winners in McKenzie Fazio (100 free, 200 free) and Kiara Borchardt (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly).

South’s girls got wins from sisters Summer Cheng (100 backstroke) and Aubrey Cheng (50 free), and West and Chugiak each produced one champion -- Ryann Dorris of West in the girls 500 free and Gabe Dobson of Chugiak in boys diving.
