More than 600 high school runners crowded the trails at Kincaid Park on Saturday for the annual Chugiak Smokin’ Stampede, where the Grace Christian boys team smoked the competition.
Led by a 1-2 finish from David Sliwinski and Ty Elliott, the Grizzlies placed four runners in the top nine to romp to the team title with a 74-point win over the runner-up Service Cougars.
Things were closer on the girls side, where Chugiak placed five runners in top 15 to edge South by six points.
Palmer’s Kayet Houser took the individual victory with a 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 4 seconds. Chugiak’s Campbell Peterson was next (19:08). Ava Trembath of Eagle River was third in 19:21 and was followed by a pair of Wolverines — fourth-place Robyn Miller (19:23) and fifth-place Elliana Zock (19:35).
Sliwinski set the pace for the boys with a time of 16:18, five seconds ahead of Elliott (16:23). Jared Gardiner of Dimond was third in 16:26.
All 10 Anchorage high schools participated, as well as most Mat-Su schools and the teams from Kotzebue and Nome. Conference championships are next week, followed by the state meet Oct. 9 at Bartlett High.
