Anchorage Wolverines beat Kenai River to gain ground in pursuit of a playoff berth

The Anchorage Wolverines beat the Kenai River Brown Bears 3-1 on Friday at Ben Boeke Arena as they continue to chase a spot in next month’s North American Hockey League playoffs.

Anchorage’s Aiden Westin scored the game’s first goal 15 minutes, 47 seconds, into the second period short-handed. Talon Sigardson assisted on the goal, which was Westin’s 18th of the season, tying him with Matt Johnson for second most on the team. Sigurdson leads the team in points (54) and goals (35).

At the 4:04 mark of the third period, Anchorage’s Cameron Morris, who is second on the team in points (45), scored his ninth goal of the season. Sigurdson and Westin picked up helpers.

Nineteen seconds later, the Wolverines made it 3-0 when Colton Friesen struck for his 11th goal with Hunter Bischoff assisting.

The Brown Bears’ Nick Stevens thwarted Raythan Robbins’ shutout bid with an unassisted goal 8:53 into the third period.

Robbins finished with 21 saves while his counterpart, Bryant Marks, turned back 40 shots.

With 62 points, the Minnesota Wilderness are in third in the Midwest Division. The Janesville Jets (61) are fourth, and the Wolverines are fifth (60). The top four teams in the division make the postseason.

The Wolverines and Brown Bears face off again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ben Boeke Arena.
