4 slalom races, 4 winners at Alyeska ski series

Racing on a challenging course on Alyeska's Race Trail, UAA's Martins Onskulis overtook teammate Conor McDonald in the second run for a narrow victory Tuesday in the first of two men's slalom races in the Coca-Cola Holiday Classic ski series.

The four races — two men's, two women's — produced four different overall winners.

In the second men's slalom race, Cedrik Gagnon — an Alyeska Ski Club coach who was third in the first race — edged Onskulis for the overall victory. Jack Stahla, an Under-19 skier coached by Gagnon, earned a place on the podium with a third-place overall finish.

In women's competition, the first race featured a podium sweep for the Alyeska Ski Club's Under-16 skiers. Randi Von Wichman's two solid runs earned her the overall win over second-place Sanne Cassee and third-place Piper Sage.

The UAA women's team swept the top three spots in the second race. Alix Wells inched out Charley Field by less than half a second for the win, and Miranda Sheely placed third.

U12 and U14 athletes will compete in slalom races Wednesday at Alyeska Resort, where good conditions are expected to continue for both racers and recreational skiers.
