Nanooks use fast start to skate to 6-2 victory over UAA

In the first game this season between Alaska's college hockey teams, the Nanooks skated to victory in the most lopsided game between the rivals since the 2013-14 season.

Justin Woods, a senior captain from Fairbanks, scored twice and added an assist to propel UAF past UAA 6-2 Friday night at Sullivan Arena.

The game was the first in the six-game Governor's Cup, which continues Saturday night with a game at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks.

UAF's four-goal win marked the biggest rout in the intrastate rivalry since the Nanooks spanked the Seawolves 7-2 on March 7, 2013, in Fairbanks.

Woods was one of four players who recorded three-point nights to carry the Nanooks to their first win of the season. Sophomore Colton Leiter and freshman Steven Jandric each had one goal and two assists, and sophomore Tristan Thompson handed out three assists.

UAF (1-3-1) took control early Friday with three straight first-period goals. Jandric opened the scoring midway through the period and then assisted on a goal by Jack Weiss that made it 2-0. Woods, who earned an assist on Jandric's goal, upped the lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the season.

UAA (0-4-1) got on the board with 37 seconds left in the period when Jordan Xavier scored on a rebound. It was the second goal of the season for Xavier, a freshman from Calgary.

After a scoreless second period, UAF stretched its lead to 4-1 on a goal by Ryker Leer. UAA cut the gap to 4-2 with a power-play goal by senior defenseman Jarrett Brown, but the Nanooks applied the dagger by scoring twice in a 47-second span with about five minutes left. Woods struck on the power play and Leiter quickly followed with an even-strength goal.

UAA was 1 of 5 on the power play. UAF was 1 of 7.

Both teams made 24 shots on goal. UAF goaltender Anton Martinsson registered 22 saves and UAA's Olivier Mantha had 18, nine of them in the first period.

Blowouts have been rare in the rivalry's recent history. In the last 21 meetings between the teams, 15 games have been decided by one goal, two have been decided by two goals, one has been decided by three goals and one ended in a tie. UAF owns a 13-7-1 record in that stretch.
