Renwick goal gives UAA extra point in 1-1 hockey tie against Michigan Tech

For the second straight game, the UAA hockey team won a sudden-death shootout to earn an extra point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

The Seawolves skated to a 1-1 tie with Michigan Tech on Friday night at Sullivan Arena, but earned the extra point on a Corey Renwick goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

UAA also earned a shootout win after a 3-3 tie at Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday.

Seawolves goalie Olivier Mantha stopped 38 Michigan Tech shots in regulation and two overtime periods and all five shots in the shootout. Michigan Tech goaltender Patrick Munson stopped 15 shots in the game and four shootout attempts.

The Huskies (5-6-3, 3-5-3 WCHA) took an early lead on a Thomas Beretta goal two minutes into the first, but failed to get past Mantha the rest of the game.

UAA (1-7-3, 1-2-2) evened the score on an Austin Azurdia goal late in the first period.

Senior defenseman Jarrett Brown stole the puck near the Huskies blue line and flipped it to center Jonah Renouf, who found Azurdia flying up the left side and the senior winger skated in and scored through the five-hole.

It was Azurdia's fourth straight game with a goal and he leads UAA with 6-4—10 totals through 11 games.

With the two points, UAA moves up from a tie for eighth to a tie for seventh in the conference standings with Alabama-Huntsville and Ferris State.

Michigan Tech is third.

The Seawolves and Huskies battle again at 7:07 p.m., Saturday, at Sullivan Arena.
