Ferris State’s fast start dooms UAA hockey team

A hot start propelled the Ferris State Bulldogs to a 4-1 win over the UAA hockey team Friday night at the Seawolf Sports Complex.

Liam McDonald scored 11 seconds into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association game to ignite a three-goal first period for the Bulldogs.

UAA goaltender Kristian Stead faced eight shots and stopped five and was replace at the first intermission by Kris Carlson. Carlson turned back 13 of 14 shots over the final two periods, but the Seawolves couldn’t crawl out of the early hole.

Ferris State made it 4-0 with a power-play goal seven minutes into the third period. The Seawolves avoided the shutout with Zac Massan’s first goal of the season, coming off assists from Tomi Hiekkavirta and Jared Nash with four minutes left in the game.

The Seawolves outshot Ferris State 29-22 and killed four of Ferris State’s five power plays while going scoreless on three of their own. The loss dropped UAA to 2-9-2 overall and 2-6-1-1 in the WCHA.

Austin Shaw made 28 saves for the Bulldogs (5-9-0 overall, 3-6-0-0 WCHA).

The teams play again Saturday at 5 p.m.
