Early morning brawl in Anchorage ends with 3 shot, hospitalized

An early Saturday morning fight among about 60 people in Downtown Anchorage as the bars were closing ended with three people hospitalized -- but no arrests so far.

According to the Anchorage Police Department, the incident started as a "disturbance" at Club Soraya, off 4th Avenue, where mainstream rapper Pastor Troy was entertaining what APD spokesperson Anita Shell described as a "pretty big crowd."

"It sounds like people were dancing in a mosh pit," said Shell. "There was a lot of shoving and pushing -- and it started to escalate." She said security turned on the lights and asked people to leave. A crowd of roughly 60 people then moved to the Sunshine Mall parking lot on 3rd Avenue, and a brawl broke out.

Police weren't notified of the incident until the shots that sent three people to the hospital were fired at 2:34 a.m. "Everyone scattered" afterwards, Shell said.

A 22-year-old woman was taken to an Anchorage hospital in critical condition from a gunshot wound to her lower torso. Two 21-year-old men were also shot, but Shell said they are in stable condition. One man was shot in the abdomen, and the other was shot in the leg and released Saturday morning. "He was at headquarters by 7 a.m."

According to Shell, APD does not know of anyone else injured in the brawl.

Anchorage police collected evidence at the scene and on Saturday afternoon were still interviewing witnesses. The names of the victims are not being released for "investigation purposes," according to Shell. No one has been charged but anyone with information is asked to call police at 786-8900 or 561-STOP.
