South climbs to No. 1 among large-school football teams

South, which has beaten every Alaska opponent by at least 19 points this season and last week pummeled then-No. 4 Service, 35-0, rose to No. 1 among large-school prep football teams in the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network poll released Monday.

The Wolverines (6-1, 6-0 Cook Inlet Conference) seized the top spot from Bartlett (6-1, 5-1 CIC), which had been No. 1 for four straight weeks but tumbled to No. 4 after falling 35-32 to West on Saturday.

Bartlett and South play Thursday night to decide the CIC champion. A South victory would ensure the Wolverines carry the conference's No. 1 seed into the state playoffs. A Bartlett victory would give it a co-championship with South and the No. 1 seed in the conference.

Lathrop (6-1) of the Railbelt Conference moved up one spot to No. 2 after beating Thunder Mountain, 41-3. West (5-2) of the CIC moved back into the poll at No. 3 and Wasilla (5-2) remained No. 5.

Defending state medium-school champion Soldotna (6-0) continued its stranglehold on No. 1 among medium and small schools and Eielson (6-0) remained No. 2.

Nikiski (6-1) moved up one spot to No. 3, courtesy of a 57-12 win over Barrow. Seward (4-3) is ranked No. 4 and Kenai (3-3) is ranked No. 5.

This is the final week of the regular season and next week's poll will be the final one of the season.
