Proposed Alaska Department of Public Safety budget would cut 24 full-time positions

JUNEAU -- Alaska's Department of Public Safety is proposing to cut 24 permanent full-time positions, though an official says no layoffs are planned for those affected.

Kelly Howell, the department's director of administrative services, said that figure includes 19 specialized trooper positions that would transfer into currently vacant patrol positions. The figure also includes vacant positions.

The department proposes cutting nine nonpermanent positions, too, of which Howell said four are currently filled. Those four are cold case investigators, whose duties would be assumed by other investigators.

The 2016 budget proposal also would add several civilian jobs within the Alaska Wildlife Troopers as part of an effort to restructure its aircraft section following a 2013 fatal crash.

Budget details were discussed during a House Finance Committee hearing Tuesday.
