UAA men's basketball drops Central Washington in conference opener

Christian Leckband fired a three-quarter court pass to Spencer Svejcar and the 6-foot-4 guard flew in for the fast-break dunk with two minutes remaining.

The dunk put an exclamation point on the win for the UAA men's basketball team, which beat Central Washington 93-65 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center. The Wildcats were previously unbeaten.

Suki Wiggs was not to be denied his usual 20-plus points, finishing with 21 to lead all scorers, and Corey Hammell recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead UAA. Hammell's double-double was his sixth of the season and Wiggs scored more than 20 points for the 11th straight time.

Diante Mitchell added 17 points going 6 of 8 from the field along with a team-high six assists.

The Seawolves (7-4, 1-0 GNAC) topped 90 points for the fifth time this season, but UAA coach Rusty Osborne said he was most impressed with his team's defense.

"I thought after the first three minutes, we had a good defensive effort," Osborne said in a TV interview after the game. "They're hard to guard. They're very unselfish."

Central Washington (4-1, 0-1) finished with three players in double figures led by center Joseph Stroud's 14.

The Wildcats started the game with a 6-0 run capped by a Stroud dunk before UAA finally reached the scoreboard on a layup by Hammell nearly three minutes into the contest. The Seawolves trailed until the 13-minute mark when Mitchell sank a jumper to put UAA up 19-17.

UAA kept up the momentum and headed into halftime with a 51-33 lead. Central Washington never got closer in the second half.

The Wildcats launched the most shots, but UAA's 50.8 shooting percent dwarfed Central Washington's 37.3 and the Seawolves outrebounded Central Washington 45-35. The Seawolves also shot well from the line (82.6 percent) with Hammell going 11 of 11.

UAA received help from the bench with Leckband and Taylor Thompson adding 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the balanced Seawolf win.

The Seawolves haven't left Anchorage since a Nov. 14 game against Hawaii Pacific in Fairbanks and they will remain in town this weekend. UAA next plays Northwest Nazarene at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
