Feds allege man with history of robbing banks stole $18K in August incident

Charges filed Monday in federal court allege the man who robbed a Midtown Anchorage bank in early August has committed multiple, other bank robberies in the past.

Wayne Michael Sexton, 44, has been charged with bank robbery, using a firearm to commit a violent crime and possession of a firearm, as he's a convicted felon, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday in U.S. District Court for the state.

Sexton is accused of armed robbery at the Credit Union 1 on Eureka Street on Aug. 7. He brandished what appeared to be a revolver and demanded money from bank employees, the FBI said at that time.

An informant called the law enforcement agency nearly two months after the robbery, stating she believed Sexton robbed the bank and that she was in possession of the revolver, according to the complaint.

Interviews with Sexton and at least three informants led to the charges. Previously unreported by the FBI, the complaint says Sexton fled the bank in a red Dodge truck, having stole nearly $18,000.

FBI agents arrested Sexton on Tuesday morning, said FBI spokeswoman Staci Feger-Pellessier.

According to the complaint, Sexton called an acquaintance on the day of the robbery asking for a ride, which the acquaintance found strange because Sexton had borrowed the red Dodge to drive from Wasilla to Anchorage to visit his mother that same morning.

Sexton was picked up at Valley of the Moon park, a couple blocks from his mom's and a mile and a half from the robbed bank. He told the people who picked him up he had "done something" and was too shook up to drive the truck back to Mat-Su, the charges say.

Prosecutors say Sexton destroyed two tracking devices near his mother's apartment. Tracking data shows the devices were near the apartment complex before their transmission stopped. Law enforcement also alleges Sexton told someone he buried the clothing used in the robbery near Valley of the Moon park.

On Oct. 13, agents interviewed Sexton at the apartment. He denied ever handing over a revolver and provided his cell phone number, the charges say. Investigators used the number to track Sexton's movements before and after the time of the alleged robbery.

In November 1999, Sexton was arrested on bank robbery charges. In an interview with agents, he admitted to robbing four banks that year.
