Mount Marathon organizers extend deadlines

Racers signed up for the 93rd edition of the Mount Marathon race in Seward will get a little more time to decide whether they want to run this year or defer their entry to next year.

The deadline for that decision has been extended to March 31, organizers said this week.

The lottery for junior racers under 18 has also been extended to March 31.

There is no lottery for adults this year. The period for petitioning for an entry began Tuesday and runs through the end of the month.

Last year’s famous run up and down the 3,022-foot peak was canceled because of the coronavirus. This year’s race is still a go, although it won’t be on the Fourth the July as usual. Organizers moved it to July 7, a Wednesday, in an effort to attract a smaller crowd than might descend on the town on July 4, which is a Sunday this year.
