Alaska has the nation's highest rate of sexual violence, with a sexual assault rate that is three times the national average. Recent cases — including the alleged rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Kotzebue, and a plea deal with no immediate jail time for an Anchorage man accused of violently attacking a woman before sexually assaulting her — have cast the spotlight on issues of sexual abuse and sexual violence. The Anchorage Daily News is working to better understand, and help find solutions for, these issues in our community.
