Single-vehicle crash on Glenn Highway leaves SUV on fire and driver dead

A person died Saturday night when an SUV crashed in a ditch and caught fire on the Glenn Highway near the Knik River bridge, officials said.

Alaska State Troopers responded after midnight to a crash around Mile 31 of the Glenn Highway, north of the Reflections Lake trailhead and four miles south of the Parks Highway intersection.

“The car was fully engulfed when troopers arrived on scene,” said Troopers’ spokesman Tim DeSpain.

The driver was northbound in the Hyundai Santa Fe when it left the roadway, came to rest in the ditch and caught fire, according to the troopers’ report. DeSpain said that the road was dry at the time of the crash.

Troopers were investigating the circumstances of the crash and the identity of the driver.
