Pedestrian seriously injured after SUV strikes her in Midtown Anchorage, police say

A pedestrian was seriously injured Thursday night when she was struck by an SUV while crossing a busy Midtown Anchorage intersection.

A Nissan Pathfinder traveling south on C Street was turning east onto Benson Boulevard around 8:18 p.m. when it struck a woman who had started walking south across Benson in the crosswalk, police spokeswoman Laura Holman said.

The woman was brought to a hospital, and Holman described her injuries on Friday as life-threatening.

The driver remained on scene and police said no charges had been filed. The intersection was closed for several hours as police investigated.

As of Friday afternoon, five people had died so far this year after vehicles struck them while they were biking or walking in Anchorage, Holman said. Another pedestrian death occurred late Friday night, bringing the city’s total up to at least six, when a taxi struck a bicyclist in a Benson Boulevard crosswalk just a block away from Thursday night’s collision.
