Cyclist in Midtown crosswalk struck and killed by taxi

Update, Nov. 9, 2022:

Police on Wednesday identified the cyclist killed Oct. 21 as 72-year-old Frank Guertin.

A preliminary investigation found that the taxi driver had a green light when he stuck Guertin who was crossing Benson Boulevard in a crosswalk on a red light, police said.

Original story:

A man on a bicycle crossing Benson Boulevard in a crosswalk at A Street late Friday was struck and killed by a taxi, Anchorage police said.

Officers were called to the scene in Midtown around 10:40 p.m. The cyclist died at the scene. The male taxi driver remained at the scene and was cooperating, police said.

Police did not immediately say whether the taxi driver, who was eastbound on Benson, had the green light or how fast he was driving.

The names of the driver and the cyclist were not immediately released by police.

The intersection of Benson and A Street was reopened about 3:30 a.m. after investigators processed the scene.

The bicyclist’s death marks at least the sixth pedestrian fatality so far this year in Anchorage, based on information from a police spokeswoman. A collision on Thursday night, involving an SUV that struck and seriously injured a woman crossing Benson Boulevard, occurred just a block away from Friday night’s fatal crash.
