Northeast Anchorage youth center temporarily closes after assault

The Boys & Girls Club Northeast Community Center closed Thursday and will remain closed through the end of the week after what police described as an assault that occurred at the center Wednesday.

The center, which is located on Muldoon Road, said in a statement that it will be closed “due to an incident involving non-members” and plans to reopen Monday. Club representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

The assault involved juveniles, police said. Officers responded to the club on Muldoon Road at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday in response to a report of a disturbance involving a weapon, according to Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

Officers contacted two people who were assaulted but neither appeared injured or required medical attention, Oistad said in an email Thursday. One of the suspects involved in the assault dropped a weapon but no shots were fired, she said. No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon.

Three juveniles entered the facility wearing masks and “physically assaulted another juvenile,” Oistad said in an email Thursday. “A fifth juvenile got involved in the altercation. During the fight, a weapon fell out of the clothing of one of the suspects. The suspect picked the weapon up and then the three suspects ran away.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southcentral Alaska serves school-aged children and youths in 23 locations across the state, according to the organization’s website.
