Woman charged with murder in Anchorage shooting, stabbing death

A woman has been arrested and charged in the shooting and stabbing death of a man in Midtown Anchorage earlier this week, police said Thursday.

Mary Rose Carter, 32, was charged with single counts of first- and second-degree murder in the death of Gregg S. Niwa, 57, police said.

Carter and Niwa were drinking and got into an argument "over pregnancy concerns" Monday evening at Niwa's home at 1774 S. Salem Drive, according to charging documents in the case, and were both "threatening to shoot each other."

Another man living at the house told police Carter "often stayed at the residence" and she and Niwa argued frequently. He told police that Carter and Niwa met about a month and a half earlier.

Police said Carter shot and stabbed Niwa, and that Niwa's body was found the next day by his roommate. Niwa had multiple stab wounds to his chest and gunshot wounds to his lower abdomen and head, according to charging documents.

After the incident, police said, Carter ran from the scene. When police arrived at the home Tuesday afternoon, Niwa's body on the floor of the foyer was "partially blocking the front door from completely opening," the charging document said.

Carter was initially scheduled for arraignment in the case Thursday, but the hearing was postponed until Friday.
