Dana Thomas named new UAF interim chancellor

Dana Thomas will become the interim chancellor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks next month, the university's president announced Friday.

Thomas will start his term as interim chancellor Aug. 14 and end next year on June 30, University of Alaska President Jim Johnsen said in a news release. He's taking over the job once held by Mike Powers.

Johnsen nominated Thomas after reviewing nearly a dozen applications, the news release said. Thomas graduated from UAF in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in biology and got his master's degree and doctorate at Oregon State University. He taught at UAF and later became the UA vice president for academic affairs and research, according to his resume.

Thomas's salary will be $300,000, according to the news release.

Johnsen announced in May he would not move forward with a search for UAF's next chancellor. Instead, he said, he would appoint a new interim chancellor as officials looked at a new accreditation model.
