17-year-old hunter dies from accidental gunshot, troopers say

A 17-year-old boy died Saturday in what Alaska State Troopers described as an accidental shooting during a moose hunt in Western Alaska.

Troopers received a report of an accident about 23 miles downriver from Kaltag, a village located on the Lower Yukon River, they said in an online report.

A hunter, who was not identified by the troopers, died from a gunshot wound he suffered at about 11:30 a.m., said troopers’ spokesman John Dougherty. He was hunting with two other people and was the only one injured, Dougherty said.

“Investigating troopers found no immediate signs of foul play,” troopers said in the report.

Further details about the victim and the incident were not immediately available on Sunday, Dougherty said.

The investigation is ongoing and the next of kin have been notified, troopers said.
