Letter: Babcock has it wrong

Tuckerman Babcock, in his Sept.22 commentary, was outraged at the senators, especially Senate President Cathy Giessel, who rejected Permanent Fund dividend advocate Laddie Shaw as the replacement for Chris Birch. Apparently, according to Babcock, legislators must confirm someone nominated by the party and selected by the governor.

Right now, the much more important action that legislators must take is deal with the catastrophic financial/PFD mess that is doing so much damage to Alaska. The PFD must be brought under proper control, never forgetting that the Permanent Fund’s purpose is to provide funding for state operation if and when oil and other natural resource revenue decline. These senators are to be commended.
