Letters to the Editor

Letter: Good management isn’t tyranny

Mr. Kruse’s letter to the editor of Nov. 9 was not only flat wrong, it was unnecessarily inflammatory. He claimed that the Anchorage Assembly imposed a “liberal dictatorship” because a significant majority of its members voted not to call for a special election to replace the acting mayor.

The Assembly did not ignore the “law,” since city legal advisors told them the Charter allowed them three options. Given the short time frames involved, the Assembly members simply made the most practical decision, and in so doing saved the municipality hundreds of thousands of dollars. No one chose “tyranny over freedom,” as Mr. Kruse suggests. The Assembly is dealing in a sensible way with the consequences of a mess not of their making. It’s a shame that some are trying to work people up by bandying inappropriate and incorrect labels around.
